Hajj and Umrah Guide

ON LEAVING RESIDENCE :

 باسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ على اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُ بِكَ أنْ أضِلَّ أَوْ أُضَلَّ، أوْ أزِلَّ أَوْ أُزَلَّ، أَوْ أظْلِمَ أَوْ أُظْلَمَ، أوْ
أجْهَلَ أَوْ يُ
جْهَلَ عليَّ

In the name of Allah. I place my trust in Allah, and no might no power except with Allah. O Allah I take refuge with you lest I should stray or slip or tripped, or oppresses, or behave foolishly or be treated foolishly. 

WHEN YOU TAKE LEAVE:

أَسْتَوْدِعُ اللَّهَ دِينَكَ وَأَمَانَتَكَ وَخَوَاتِيمَ أَعْمَالِكَ 

I place your religion, your faithfulness and end of your deeds in the trust of Allah.

WHILE THE VEHICLE STARTS MOVING 

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ ، الحَمْدُ لِلهِ الحَمْدُ لِلهِ الحَمْدُ لِلهِ ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ ،سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّيْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِيْ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ فَإِنَّه لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبِ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَمِنْ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

How perfect He is, the One Who has placed this (transport) at our service and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. All praise for Allah. (3) Allah Is the greatest (3) How perfect you are, O Allah, verily I have wronged my soul, so forgive sins except You. O Allah, we ask You for birr and thaqwaa in this journey of ours, and we You for deeds which please You. O Allah, facilitate our journey and let us cover it’s distance quickly. O Allah, You are The companion on the journey and The Successor over the family. O Allah, I take refuge with You from the difficulties of travels, from having a change of hearts and being in a bad predicament, and I take refuge in You from an ill fated outcome with wealth and family.

THALBIYA :

 لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ، إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ لاَشَرِيْكَ لَكَ

Here I am at the service , O Allah , Here I am at the Service, Here I am at the Service. There is no associate with Thee; here I am at The Service. Verily all praise and grace is due to Thee, and sovereignty (too) There is no associate with Thee. 

 ✔ Umrah (Tawaaful-Qudoom)

Proceed to appropriate Meeqaat. On entering state of Ihram recite –

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ بِعُمْرَة

LabbaikAllahumma bi-`umrah

Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call) making ‘Umrah.

In fear of not completing the ‘Umrah, recite –

اللَّهُمَّ مَحِلِّيْ حَيْثُ حَبَسْتَنِي

Allahumma mahillee haithu habastanee

O Allah, [If I am prevented by an obstacle then indeed]

my place is where You prevent me.

After taking these steps it is prohibited for the pilgrims to wear sewn clothes, remove or pluck hairs, clip nails, cover their heads, use perfume, have sexual intercourse, hunt, enter into marriage contracts, or cut the trees of the Sacred Precinct

Then loudly recite the talbiyah –

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْك، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْك،

إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَ النِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَ الْمُلْكُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَك

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, Innalhamda wanni‘mata laka walmulk La sharika lak”

Here I am O Allah, (in response to Your call), here I am. Here I am,You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all the Praise, Grace and Sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.

But woman should let her voice audible only to herself

Make intention for the Tawaf. Starting at al-Hajarul-Aswad (The Black Stone)1,men only – uncover right shoulder by placing Ihram underneath right arm-pit. When beginning each circuit, make a sign with your right hand towards al-Hajarul-Aswad (The Black Stone)2, and recite –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

 

Make seven circuit’s of Ka’bah 3 (for first three circuit’s only, men only – swiftly walk around the Ka’bah; Then begin fourth circuit, walking at normal pace completely around and finish until seventh circuit). No particular supplication (Duaa) is essential during Tawaaf. During each circuit, whilst between ar-Ruknul-Yamaanee (The Yemeni Corner) 4 and The Black Stone, recite –

{رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَ فِي الآخِرَةِ

حَسَنَةً وَ قِنَا عَذَابَ النَّار}

Rabbanaa aatinaa fid-dunyaa hasanatan wa feel aakhirati hasanatan wa qinaa ‘adhaaban naar

Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!

Cover right shoulder, and then go behind Station of Ibrahim and recite

{وَاتَّخِذُوْا مِنْ مَّقَامِ إِبْرَاهِيْمَ مُصَلًّى}

Wattakhidhoo min-maqaami ibraaheema musalla

And take the station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.

Behind Station of Ibrahim – if possible, otherwise anywhere within al-Masjidul-Haraam: Pray two rakaah naafilah; in first rakaah recite Soorah al-Kaafiroon and in second rakaah, Soorah al-Ikhlaas. Then drink Zam-Zam water, then pour some water over head.

Begin Sa’ee at as-Safa. The Sa’ee Area is approximately 1/2 km (= 0.31 mile ) each round. The total 7 rounds is less than 3.5 km (=2.17 miles ).

At foot of as-Safa recite –

{إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَآئِرِ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ

حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلاَ جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ

بِهِمَا وَمَنْ تَطَوَّعَ خَيْراً فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيْم}

 

Innas-safaa wal marwata min sha’aa’irillaahi faman hajjal baita ‘awi`tamara falaa junaaha ‘alaihi an yattawwafa bihimaa wa man tatawwa’a khiran fa’innAllaha shaakirun ‘aleemun

Verily! As-Safa and al-Marwah are of the Symbols of Allah. So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or ‘Umrah of the House to perform the Tawaf between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, then verily, Allah is All-Recognizer, All-Knower.

Each time upon as-Safa and al-Marwah facing Ka’bah, recite –

اَللَّهُ أَكْبَر، اَللَّهُ أَكْبَر، اَللَّهُ أَكْبَر

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَه، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِي وَ يُمِيْتُ وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْر؛

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَه، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ

وَ نَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ وَ هَزَمَ الأَحْزَابَ وَ حْدَه

Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar – laa illaaha illallahu wahdau laa shareekalah – lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu – yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer – laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa

shareekalah – anjaza wa’dahu wa nasara ‘ abdahu wa hazamal ahzaaba wahdahu

Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner.

To Him belongs all Sovereignty and all Praise. He alone gives life and causes death, He is Omnipotent over all things. There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner. He has fulfilled His promise, and helped His slave, and He alone has defeated the confederates.

9th day of Dhul-Hijjah (Yawmu ‘Arafah)

Stay in ‘Arafah

Pray Fajr in Mina, then, after sunrise, calmly proceed to ‘Arafah.

It is permissible to continue to recite the Talbiyah –

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْك، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْك،

إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَ النِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَ الْمُلْكُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَك

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal hamda wanni‘mata laka walmulk La sharika lak”

and also proclaim the Greatness of Allah by reciting –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Stopover at Namirah 7 and remain there until after Zawaal (sun at highest point – no shadow)

and listen to the Khutbah. At the time of Zhuhr, pray Zhuhr and ‘Asr (in shortened form and combined), after one Adhaan and two Iqaamah’s. Do not pray anything between these two prayers, if in Namirah. Nor pray anything after ‘Asr. Then calmly proceed to ‘Arafah, remaining there until sunset. Stand upon the rocks at the bottom of the Mount of Mercy (Jabalur-Rahmah); if not, then all of ‘Arafah is a standing place. Facing the Qiblah, with raised hands, supplicate and also recite the Talbiyah –

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْك، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْك،

إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَ النِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَ الْمُلْكُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَك

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal hamda wanni‘mata laka walmulk La sharika lak”

It is encouraged to frequently recite the following –

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَه، لَهُ الْمُلْك،

وَ لَهُ الْحَمْد، وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْر

Laa ilaha illAllahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu lahul mulk wa lahul hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shay’in qadeer

There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah alone, without partner.

To Him belongs all Sovereignty and all Praise,

and He is Omnipotent over all things.

 

–         this is a great day for supplication. Supplicate till sunsets

–         After sunset, calmly proceed to Muzdalifah.

Stay in Muzdalifah

Pray Maghrib and combine it with ‘Ishaa in shortened form 6, after one Adhaan and two Iqaamah’s. Do not pray anything between these two prayers. Go to sleep until Fajr.

10th day of Dhul-Hijjah (Yawmun-Nahr)

Pray Fajr at its earliest time. Calmly proceed to al-Mash’arul-Haraam, ascend upon it. If not possible, then all of Muzdalifah is a standing place.

Facing Qiblah, praise Allah by reciting –

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّه

Alhamdu lillahi (All Praise is for Allah).

and proclaim the Greatness of Allah by reciting –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

then proclaim the Oneness of Allah by reciting –

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّه

Laa ilaha illAllahu

(There is none truly worthy of worship except Allah).

– and finally, supplicate until the visibility of the yellow glow of the sun – before sunrise. Before sunrise, calmly proceed to Mina 9, reciting the talbiyah –

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْك، لَبَّيْكَ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْك،

إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَ النِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَ الْمُلْكُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَك

“Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayk la sharika laka Labbayk, Innal hamda wanni‘mata laka walmulk La sharika lak”

Stoning The Pillars  Ž

In Muzdalifa, pick up stones. 10 Between the times periods of after sunrise until the night, calmly proceed to Jamaratul-’Aqabah al-KubraaŽ for stoning. Throw each of the seven stones at Jamarah reciting –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar

Allah is the Greatest. (after each throw).

Performing The Sacrifice

Calmly proceed to slaughter house in Mina for sacrifice, or any other appropriate place otherwise, if al-Hadee sacrificial ticket has been purchased, this is a permissible alternative. Upon slaughtering, recite –

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَ اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّ هَذَا مِنْكَ وَ لَكَ اللَّهُمَّ تَقَبَّلْ مِنِّي

Bismillaahi WAllahu Akbar Al-Laahumma Inna Hadha Minka Wa Laka Al Lahumma Taqabbal Minnee

In the name of Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, it is from You and belongs to You. O Allah, accept this from me.

 

Shave Head

After the sacrifice, Men: shaving head is preferable, or cut hair equally from all over head; Women: cut one-third finger length of hair. Remove Ihram, as all restrictions are now lifted except marital relations. Calmly proceed to Makkah to perform Tawaaful-Ifaadhah.

 Tawaaful-Ifaadhah (Tawaaful-Ziyaarat) 8

Upon entering al-Masjidul-Haraam with the right foot, recite –

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ سَلِّم،

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِك

Allahumma salli `alaa muhammadin wa sallim –

Allahumma aftah lee abwaaba rahmatika

No Ihram required. Start at al-Hajarul-Aswad (Black Stone)1. When beginning each circuit, make a sign with your right hand towards al-Hajarul-Aswad 2, and recite

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Walking at normal pace, make seven circuits of Ka’bah 3. During each circuit, whilst between Yemeni Corner 4 (ar-Ruknul-Yamaanee) 4 and the Black Stone (al-Hajarul-Aswad), recite –

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَه، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِي وَ يُمِيْتُ وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْر؛

لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَه، أَنْجَزَ وَعْدَهُ

وَ نَصَرَ عَبْدَهُ وَ هَزَمَ الأَحْزَابَ وَ حْدَه

Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar – laa illaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareekalah – lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu – yuhyee wayumeetu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli shai’in qadeer – laa ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareekalah – anjaza wa’dahu wa nasara ‘ abdahu wahazamal ahzaaba wahdahu

– Three times, making du’aa after first and second recitation only.

Between the walk from as-Safa to al-Marwah and al-Marwah to as-Safa, it is permissible to recite –

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَم، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الأَعَزُّ الأَكْرَم

Rabbighfir warham innaka antal a’azzul akram

Complete walk from as-Safa to al-Marwah (one circuit), then al-Marwah to as-Safa (second circuit) and continue for seven circuits, finishing at al-Marwah. Upon encountering green lights, men only – run from one light to other light. Upon the completion of the Sa’ee, all restrictions are now lifted including marital relations.

Upon leaving al-Masjidul-Haraam with the left foot, recite –

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ سَلِّم،

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِك

Allahumma salli ‘ala muhammadin wa sallim –

Allahumma innee ‘as’aluka min fadhlika

O Allah, send prayers and peace upon Muhammad,

O Allah, verily I ask You from Your Favour.

The following procedure can be performed in any order also the Tawaaful-Ifaadhah could be done on the following days.

Stay in Mina For Stoning    ŽŒ

From the time period between after Zawaal (sun at highest point – no shadow) until the night, stone all the three Jamarahs, 21 required per day10ŽŒ

Facing first Jamarah, as-Sughraa (smallest), throw each of the seven stones at Jamarah reciting –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar Allah is the Greatest. (after each throw).

– After stoning first JamarahŒ, face Qiblah (with first Jamarah to your right), raise hands and supplicate as you wish. Then, calmly proceed to 2nd (middle one ) Jamarah Facing second Jamarah, al-Wustaa, throw each of the seven stones at Jamarah reciting –

After stoning final Jamarah, move onwards without supplicating. After final stoning on 12th day 11, calmly exit Mina and proceed to Makkah. Before final departure from Makkah, perform Tawaaful-Wadaa’ (Farewell Tawaf) as your last act.

Tawaaful-Wadaa (Farewell) 8

Upon entering al-Masjidul-Haraam with the right foot, recite –

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ سَلِّم،

اللَّهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِي أَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِك

Allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa sallim –

Allahumma aftah lee abwaaba rahmatika

O Allah, send prayers and peace upon Muhammad,

O Allah, open the doors of Your Mercy for me.

No Ihram required. Start at The Black Stone1.When beginning each circuit, make a sign with your right hand towards al-Hajarul-Aswad (The Black Stone)2, and recite –

اللَّهُ أَكْبَر

Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest).

Walking at normal pace, make seven circuits of Ka’bah 3. During each circuit, whilst between ar-Ruknul-Yamaanee 4 and al-Hajarul-Aswad, recite –

{رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَ فِي الآخِرَةِ

حَسَنَةً وَ قِنَا عَذَابَ النَّار}

There is nothing further required of you from the rituals of Hajj. Upon leaving al-Masjidul-Haraam with the left foot, recite –

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ سَلِّم،

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِك

Allahumma salli ‘alla muhammadin wa sallim –

Allahumma innee ‘as’aluka min fadhlika
